On October 1, 2018 in Funchal, Madeira, started the World Championships Down Syndrome –
World Championships of people with Down Syndrome, in which Poland is represented by five players, medalists of the XXV Athletics Championships of people with intellectual disabilities, which took place in June this year in Krakow. In Portugal, they compete in athletics competitions.
The representation of the World Cup for people with Down syndrome consists of three girls and two boys. Magdalena Dąbrowska and Zofia Dzięcioł are experienced – despite young age (16 and 14 years old) – athletes, who last year brought home gold and silver medals from the European Championships. In the World Championships in Funchal they will start at 100, 200, 400 and 800 m races and in long jumps. In the same competition, in the men’s category, Dominik Ulatowski and Mikołaj Woźniak will start. The men will also start in the triathlon. The fifth person in the team – Zuzanna Szymańska – will compete in shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and in the triathlon.
Polish representatives are young, promising athletes from 14 to 22 years old. Every day they practice in the athletics sections of Mazowieckie Stowarzyszenie Społeczno-Sportowe Sprawni Razem and the SONI Foundation, under the supervision of coaches – Marcin Pawikowski and Paweł Różański. As part of the preparation for participation in the championships, in August and September, the players participated in an intensified training cycle and in the sports camp in Augustów.
